Spatial visualization interfaces

 

As large, high-resolution displays become increasingly common research labs, they are starting to take on an important role in providing a platform for the visual analysis and exploration of large-scale datasets. It is therefore crucial to research and develop appropriate visual analytic techniques and frameworks that can effectively leverage these displays to support complex sense making tasks. However, little work has been done on adapting our existing repertoire of visualization paradigms to take advantage of the unique affordances of these platforms.

In collaboration with domain scientists, we are investigating and developing new visual representation and interaction schemes that lets scientists seamlessly interface with large-scale displays. The following video shows an example of a visualization application for large, high-resolution displays. The application visualizes a large number of animal movement trajectories (in this case, movement of Seed Harvester ants during controlled experiments), enabling ecologists to quickly formulate and test hypothesis that explain the observed movement patterns.
